A new approach to the data analyst profession: end-to-end ownership of analytical data flows

Aleksandr Vasilchenko

This article examines the division of responsibilities between data analysts and data engineers in enterprise data warehouse development. It proposes a conceptual model of end-to-end ownership of analytical data flows, in which an analytics engineer is accountable for the consistency of business rules, transformations, testing, documentation, and maintenance within a defined analytical domain, while collaborating with a platform team on ingestion, infrastructure, and security. The study combines a comparison of responsibility models with a review of technical literature and publicly available implementation cases. It presents a responsibility matrix, testable hypotheses, and metrics for future empirical evaluation. Published performance figures are treated as indirect evidence and cannot isolate the impact of the proposed organizational model.

About the specialist

Data warehouse specialist with ten years in data analytics. Since December 2024 he has been Lead DWH Analyst at Lotsiya LLC in Moscow, where he designed the enterprise data warehouse architecture from scratch, including logical and physical data models, and made the architectural decisions for migrating data from Vertica, MS SQL, CRM systems, APIs, Kafka and file storage into Greenplum. He developed dozens of analytical data marts, defined ETL requirements for data engineers, used dbt to prepare YAML mappings and field descriptions, and mentored colleagues as a team lead, including code reviews.

From 2022 to 2024 he was Lead Data Analyst at Digital Medical Services LLC, where he developed data models for a nationwide electronic medical appointment booking system, automated more than 15 recurring reports and resolved three systemic booking errors, reducing incorrect bookings by 12%. At Absolut Bank (2021‑2022) he maintained a metadata registry for all data sources, developed a Data Vault 2.0 logical model for an Oracle-based enterprise data warehouse that was approved by the architecture committee, and developed SQL scripts that automatically validate completeness, uniqueness and referential integrity during ingestion. He also introduced data quality dashboards and identified eight critical discrepancies between sources, improving management reporting accuracy by 15%. Earlier he worked as a data analyst at MGTS (2021) and as an analytics department specialist in a government organization (2016‑2021). He studied artificial intelligence and data science at Geek University (2021) and graduated from the Baltic State Technical University "VOENMEH" named after D. F. Ustinov in Saint Petersburg (2015).
