The Evolution of Railway Simulation: From a Virtual Cab to an Intelligent Competency Management System

Svetlana E. Egzhanova

The development of railway simulator technologies is gradually changing the role of the simulator in professional personnel training. Whereas the main indicator of progress has traditionally been the degree of realism of the simulated cab and of rolling stock behavior, modern systems are increasingly becoming sources of data on trainee actions and components of a digital learning environment. This article examines promising directions of this transformation: the use of training data generated by simulator complexes, adaptive training scenarios, artificial intelligence, digital twins, distributed digital platforms, and the integration of training outcomes with safety management tasks.

About the specialist

Railway engineer, graduate of the Moscow State University of Railway Transport (MIIT, 2005-2010) in Control and Informatics in Technical Systems. From 2010 to 2023 she worked at the Design & Engineering Bureau of Locomotive Operations of JSC Russian Railways in the Microprocessor Systems & Computing Department: software engineer, mathematician and, from 2019, lead design engineer. She led the development of simulator complexes for more than 30 locomotive series used for training locomotive crews and railway personnel, emergency scenario training and competency assessment. Co-inventor of two RF patents on training systems for personnel of special self-propelled rail rolling stock (RU 2801838 C1, RU 2805578 C1). Participated in the development of the national standard GOST R 70449-2022 "Simulator Complexes for Locomotive Crew Training. General Technical Requirements".

Winner of the All-Russian competition "Engineer of the Year - 2022" in the category "Professional Engineers", included in the Register of Professional Engineers of Russia. Recognised with the Honorary Diploma "Star of Quality" and the National Certificate of the Republic of Kazakhstan, a 1st Degree Diploma of the XLVI International Competition of Scientific Research Works (2025) and a Letter of Gratitude from Kyrgyz Railways. Author of six scientific publications in Lokomotiv, Zheleznodorozhny Transport, Transportnoye Delo Rossii and The American Journal of Engineering and Technology. External peer reviewer of the journal Vestnik Nauki (2020-2024), jury member of the "Evolution of Science and Technology" and "Innovators" competitions (2025-2026).
